Papers pertaining to the history of the education of women in Virginia [manuscript], 1910-1914, 1940.

The collection contains eight student essays on the lack of higher education opportunities for women. All are unsigned and identified only by number. The collection also contains correspondence on the establishement of a co-ordinate college for women at Charlottesville, 1910-1916, encluding letters to or from Edwin A. Alderman, Lucy L. Davis, George B. Keezel, Alice J. Kyle, J. C. Moss, Mary Cooke Branch Munford, Mrs. C. T. Rucker, and Ormond Stone. The collection also contains draft minutes for the Woman's Committee for the Sixth Congressional District, 1914, on the issue of a co-ordinate college for women; lists of newspapers and legislators in the 6th district; a draft of a summary on the actions of the University of Virginia; multiple copies of a flier "A state college for women at the University of Virginia"; and a portion of an article on "The higher education of women in the United States," ca. 1911. Miscellaneous items include the Golden Jubilee Song of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, 1940; and assorted newsclippings, 1911-1914 on a co-ordinate college.

Munford, Mary Cooke Branch, 1865-1938

Munford was director of the Department of Public Welfare in Stamford, Conn., 1935-1940, and then director of Recreation and Personal Service Units with the American Red Cross in Ft. McClellan, Ala. During World War II she served with the Red Cross in England, North Africa, and Italy.
